Tradition has it that the first one to find the green pickle on the tree opens the first present. One year, the boys were looking and looking and looking, but Heiko had hid the pickle in a ficus tree across the room. A friend gave us this a few years ago, and the tradition has stuck.

Wow - we also have a pickle like this! It is my favorite ornament because it is so silly - my parents sent it because they live near Dillsburg, PA where they have a "pickle drop" at New Year's. Now I can think of your family, too, as we laugh at our pickle.
I'm going to have to get a pickle! I did this for the first time at our office Christmas party this year and it was so fun! I had never heard of it before!
We also have a pickle on our tree. My husband got it one year for me when I was pregnant....you know what I was craving!
