One roll of black and white striped wall paper, put on horizontally, solved that problem. 
The top of the wall was left as is, but the stripe gives it enough "pop". Come to think of it, a strip of wallpaper like this could look pretty neat going down a long hallway. Hmmmm...where could I do that?
